Today I brought cupcakes to Logan's class. Logan was excited that I would see his friends, and that we would celebrate his birthday!
I get to Logan's class, and Mrs. Kristi leads the children in singing Happy Birthday. Logan wore the biggest smile while he had everyone's attention. Logan and I handed out Birthday napkins, then cupcakes. Mmmmm!
After we clean up the very little mess (note to self: always bake the mini cupcakes rather than the regular size ones. I made two for each child, and there was absolutely no waste. NOTHING but paper was put in the trash. Each child ate their entire cupcake = cake and icing!), Mrs. Kristi allowed the children to go to centers.
While the children were in centers, Mrs. Kristi told me that Logan was very smart. I explained that I used to teach Pre-Kindergarten, and that I work with Logan all the time, almost everyday. She went on to tell me that he already knows the word list for the end of the school year. I agreed. Mrs. Kristi then told me that she wants to have Logan tested for GT. She said that today, he wrote the word 'p-l-a-t-e' on one of his assignments. Being that the word plate has a silent e at the end, she was shocked that a Kindergarten student would know to write it. She then told me that she sent Logan to show his assignment to Mr. Sevin (the principal) because she wanted to show him how advanced Logan is. Mrs. Kristi then explained that she wants to see what words Logan would be able to read from the Dolch 1st Grade Sight Word List. I told her that over the summer he read a 2nd Grade Level book. She said, "You see! I'll print the list up to 2nd Grade for you." We continued talking, and basically Mrs. Kristi doesn't want Logan to get bored in class, and I agreed. I told her that as long as he continues to come home with green lights, it was ok, as he is not perfect and still needs some of the Kindergarten skills (organization, socialization, etc.). She agreed. She also told me that she will pull some 1st Grade work for him to work on, to provide challenges. I like that idea, but I don't want him to be bored in 1st Grade because of it. I think I will suggest projects for Logan to work on, such as finding all of the letter A's in a book, or making a list of words that start with A, rather than moving onto a 1st Grade workbook. We'll see.
After Mrs. Kristi and I discussed some options, the children cleaned up their centers and prepared to go home. As a treat, Kristi pulled out the pet snake, Tangle. She went around the mat, and provided each child with the opportunity to touch him. Sure enough, the children were petting, pulling, and squeezing Tangle! I thought for sure he would show some frustration and take a bite out of someone! I guess he's used to it, though! After Kristi went around the room, she came to me. Of course I couldn't say no, all of the children touched it! He was just about everything I'd imagine a snake to feel like.
Before handing me the Word List, Kristi told me she printed the Pre-Primer list through 3rd Grade. She asked me to see how far I could get with Logan.
We came home, and Logan took a well deserved nap. When he woke up, I pulled out the list. Sure enough, out of the entire list that was printed for me, Logan could not correctly read 2. Been was read as bean, and later as Ben. Kind was read as kinned (rhyme with pinned). One of these words is on the 2nd Grade list. One is on the 3rd Grade list. I want to print the 4th grade list, just to see how far he can go!
